Sustainability
The Glatthaar Keller sustainability vision
The three main areas of sustainability and sustainable action are Economy, Ecology and Social. These form the basis of sustainable development and are critical to the long-term success and well-being of businesses, societies and the environment.
The three areas of sustainability are inextricably linked and complementary. Sustainable development is only possible if all three are addressed simultaneously. By acting in an economically, ecologically and socially responsible way, we can create a liveable and sustainable future for our society and our planet.
FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR PLANET
Climate change and resource constraints require committed action.
We aim to achieve climate neutrality primarily through CO₂ reduction, not offsetting.
We are committed to raising awareness of the issue of climate neutrality among our employees so that they can make their contribution to achieving our joint goal through active participation.
We are committed to promoting climate neutrality through our suppliers, service providers and other business partners.
We have set ourselves the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2030.
IMPLEMENTED MEASURES
GREEN ELECTRICITY
We already use only green electricity in our own production and administration facilities.
DRINKING WATER
At our headquarters, to avoid waste and transport, we have switched from drinking bottled water to drinking from water dispensers.
GREEN MINDSET
We have integrated the topics of sustainability and environmental protection into our employee training programme.
GREEN MOBILITY
We offset 100% of the fuel consumption of our company car fleet while including Zero Emission vehicles. Furthermore, we have installed public and business charging facilities.
BIODIVERSITY
Implementation of training programmes on the topic of sustainability, e.g. flower meadow for bees and insects to improve biodiversity.
FIRST AND ONLY BASEMENT MANUFACTURER WITH A CERTIFIED ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Glatthaar Keller is the first and only basement manufacturer to be awarded ISO 14001 certification for its environmental management system. This prestigious international standard helps organisations to identify, monitor and control their environmental impacts to continually improve their environmental performance.
The certification underlines our strong commitment to environmental protection and sustainable practices by minimising environmental impact and committing to continuous improvement. The ISO 14001 certification is a significant step towards environmental sustainability and every customer who receives their basement from our German manufacturing plant, has the knowledge that we make environmental protection a priority.

EFFECTIVE CO₂ SAVINGS THROUGH OPTIMISED CONCRETE MIX DESIGNS
As part of our research and development efforts, we are constantly using the latest technologies and working closely with our concrete technologists to improve our environmental performance and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of our products. Through these efforts, we have optimised our concrete formulations and achieved significant savings:
- In the development of the concrete mix for the construction of our Glatthaar Manufacturing Hall 2, we achieved a CO₂ saving of an impressive 27.4% compared to the original mix. This equates to a saving of 324,156 kg CO₂ equivalent.
- We have also made significant progress in the construction of the basement for the Manufacturing Hall 1. Here we achieved a 12.5% CO₂ saving compared to the original mix. This equates to a saving of 399,030 kg CO₂ equivalent.
These achievements demonstrate our commitment to sustainable innovation and show that we are actively playing our part in protecting the environment. We will continue to strive to develop solutions through research and development that are both environmentally and economically beneficial.

ECOLOGICAL RESPONSIBILITY
OUR HANDLING OF MATERIAL
The environmental impact of our product is significantly influenced by the consumption of the three main materials – steel, concrete and insulation. These are not only the materials that are used the most in terms of quantity, but also the materials with the highest CO₂ footprint. For this reason, we first look at them in detail as part of our environmental management. For the coming years, we have set ourselves the goal of taking a detailed look at all other materials and products that we expect to have a significant environmental impact and that are part of our basement and ground bearing slabs.
OUR APPROACH TO WATER AND WASTE MATERIALS
Water use and waste disposal can have a significant environmental impact. At Glatthaar Keller, we are committed to closing the manufacturing loop. The amount of waste directly generated by Glatthaar Keller in 2022 was 157,819 litres (measured by the volume of waste containers disposed of). We have measures in place to further reduce this amount.
OUR COMMITMENT TO BIODIVERSITY
The careful use of potentially environmentally harmful substances and the internal environmental management system established in accordance with the requirements of ISO 14001 ensure that the impact is minimal. This protects the habitats of insects and other animals, as well as bodies of water.
